Obama signs order to honor CTE students
On June 22, President Obama signed an executive order expanding the Presidential Scholars Program to include CTE students. The program, created by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964, honors graduating high school seniors for academic excellence, artistic accomplishments and civic contributions. Obama's order will expand the criteria to honor students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship and accomplishment in CTE fields. The first group of up to 20 CTE scholars will be nominated in spring 2016.

Manpower Group survey shows global skills gap concerns deepening
The ManpowerGroup has released its annual Talent Shortage Survey. Among the top findings: the number of global employers facing difficulty filling jobs has increased for the sixth consecutive year, to 38 percent. Skilled-trade professionals - mechanics, electricians and chefs, among others - were listed as the hardest positions to fill for the fourth year in a row. Other hard-to-fill positions included engineers, technicians, accounting, finance and IT staff.

White House Upskill initiative
The President's Upskill initiative is focused on empowering some of the least prepared Americans with the education and training they need to develop new skills and earn higher wages. Some front-line workers are just starting their careers. Some are older workers who don't have the basic skills to allow them to take on more responsibility and reach higher paying roles. Still others have the competencies, but not formal credentials, to excel at a more senior-level job. April, 2015.

2015 Talent Shortage Survey

Executive Order -- Amendment to Executive Order 11155, Awards for Special Capability in Career and Technical Education
President Barack Obama signed an executive order recognizing U.S. Presidential Scholars in Career and Technical Education (CTE). The announcement came in response to a bipartisan letter from U.S. Senators Tammy Baldwin, Tim Kaine, and Rob Portman urging the White House to expand the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program to commend the efforts of students who have chosen CTE pathways.

Oregon rebuilds school-to-career programs
Oregon hopes to encourage more hands on, industry-relevant classes through a renewed commitment to career and technical education. The state kicked in a $250,000 grant to help launch programming this year. High school students are enrolled and learning skills to equip them for the workforce.

Auto Tech Program (Snap-On) Welcomes a Political Figure
Hillary Clinton visited an auto tech program in Iowa on Tuesday, April 14th. The program was the Kirkwood Community College satellite automotive program in Monticello, IA (about 40 miles NE of Cedar Rapids). That facility operates a Toyota T-TEN program, as well as a Snap-On auto tech program. The attached photo shows Toyota's "T-TEN" banner displayed in the background. Portman introduce bipartisan bill to improve career rediness in schools
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Rob Portman (R-OH), co-chairs of the Senate Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, introduced the Career Ready Act of 2015, legislation that would help ensure students are college and career-ready by strengthening school counseling programs and encouraging states to keep track of career readiness factors implemented in school districts. 2/12/2015
